AT&T is the largest provider of telephone services, wireless services, and DSL internet access in the US. SBC Communications, Inc. purchased the AT&T Corporation in 2005 and then changed their company name back to the better known AT&T name after the acquisition. The company currently boasts over 70 million customers.
SBC is now partnering with Yahoo to offer customers high-speed internet service under the name SBC Yahoo. They have put together a user-friendly and easily configurable Web portal that offers customers a wide range of useful services such as online storage, spam filtering, pop-up blocking, and important parental controls over internet browsing.
SBC Yahoo DSL is competitively priced and easily competes with other DSL service providers.
DSL stands for digital subscriber line. This technology utilizes copper telephone lines to connect consumers to the internet at high speeds. These speeds will range from 256Kbps to 1.544Mbps for downstream transfers (this means downloading or file transfers to your PC). Upstream DSL speeds range from 128 Kbps to 384 Kbps (this is uploading files or transferring files from your PC to another PC). These speeds will vary according to the type of DSL service you have.
Network congestion will affect these speeds and cause them to likely be considerably less than these optimal speeds. Even with these factors slowing down a connection, a DSL connection will still deliver an internet connection close to a T1 line for much less money. Also, DSL is always available and probably always on as opposed to taking time to dial in to the internet connection with a modem.
DSL uses digital technology to send compressed data over telephone wires. This is accomplished by using a special modem that encodes this data and transmits it over an unused frequency on the same traditional telephone wires. Setting up a DSL connection is more complicated that setting up an internet connection utilizing a standard modem, however. First the telephone line must be connected to the DSL modem and then this modem must be connected to an Ethernet network card in a PC. Drivers are necessary to interface the PC with the network also.
SBC Yahoo DSL’s current price schedule is as follows:
1.        Basic DSL $19.95 per month (presented as up to 10 times faster than dial up connections)
2.       Express DSL $ 25.00 per month (presented as up to 25 times faster than dial up connections)
3.       Pro DSL $30.00 per month (presented as up to 50 times faster than dial up connections)
4.       Elite DSL $ 35.00 per month (presented as up to 100 times faster than dial up connections)
SBC Yahoo’s DSL package comes complete with an anti-spy and anti-virus protection, pop-up blocker, parental controls, mail protection, and a user dashboard. You can manage your email, photos, and instant messenger messages easily. You can also create a homepage, personalize your content, and personalize the look and feel of your internet browsing. Games, music, and videos are also offered to customers. Technical support is easily and readily found as well.
