Finding a good lawyer can be tough. Many problems could be avoided if you learn more about picking a good lawyer. There are a few commonly made mistakes that happen when hiring an attorney.

  1. Check the attorney’s area of expertise! Some attorneys can perform outside of their skills, but most do not know enough about other areas of the law.
  2. Check out the fees! If you don’t check fees first, you cannot complain about being charged too much, or any other fee-related problem. Remember to check first!
  3. Choose a good attorney, not one that is sympathetic! Though it is nice that they sympathize with you, that does not guarantee that they can win your case. A good attorney requires both.
  4. Make sure they’re available! If a lawyer is too busy to serve you, then you could end up in a bad position in the future. Make sure that you discuss how much time you need, and find a lawyer that can meet your requirements.
  5. Do not hire the first attorney you find. Get the names of a few through referrals, and then research them and make a good choice based off that.
  6. Meet your lawyer in person! If you don’t meet the attorney in person, you won’t have a relationship with them. Though you can do this over the phone and email, you can find out more when you’re face-to-face with them.
  7. Research your choices first. Get referrals and find info on the lawyers you can choose. Always check the attorney’s background before hiring them, and talk to someone that has worked with them. Check the Martindale-Hubbell directory for guidance.
  8. Don’t get passed around. Make sure that the attorney you hire will be with you the entire time. Sometimes lawyers will pass their clients around, which can be very confusing.
  9. Don’t fall for “I’m doing you a favor here!” Decline an offer that may not be in your best interest. Always hire the best attorney you can with what you have.
Make sure you’re prepared.  You often get charged by the hour, so try not to let things go on too long. Show up prepared for your meetings. If you don’t, prepare for the bills!
